FDA-approved drug Viagra could be among the top 10 most expensive drugs by 2016.
On Tuesday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a drug called Viagra for marketing and the generic version of it.
The new drug is marketed by Pfizer, which owns the patent on the Viagra brand. The drug is also marketed as a treatment for enlarged prostate.
FDA-approved drugs are used to treat a condition that affects men's sexual function, which includes impotence or erectile dysfunction.
Some of the Viagra’s most commonly used brands include Levitra, Cialis, and Staxyn.
Viagra is approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction and is sometimes sold under the name "VIAGRA" or “Viagra.”
A clinical trial conducted by Pfizer for the treatment of erectile dysfunction found the drug was effective in more than 80 percent of men.
In the study, men who took the drug for four weeks reported more than a month's worth of improved sexual performance.
Pfizer’s Viagra, which is sold in generic form, was the top selling prescription drug in 2016, behind Levitra and Cialis.
But in October, the company said it was looking at ways to reduce the cost of Viagra.
Sales of Viagra were also growing at a slower rate than what had been seen in the past, said Dr. Michael Weinberger, a professor of medicine at the University of Southern California who is not involved with the study.
In November, Pfizer's own drug for erectile dysfunction was approved by the FDA for sale.
A spokeswoman for the FDA said the agency had not received any reports of adverse events associated with Viagra.
However, she said, there were several potential side effects of the drug that patients should be aware of.
In May, the FDA approved a drug for treating low blood pressure, also called “metoprolol”.
Metoprolol is an oral beta-blocker that was the first of a new class of drugs that is used to treat people with high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs, which helps reduce the workload on the heart and to help lower blood pressure.
It has been used off-label to treat hypertension, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Pfizer said Tuesday that it was not aware of any adverse events linked to Viagra.
“We are not aware of any study that has evaluated the safety and efficacy of Viagra in patients with cardiovascular conditions. We are not aware of any study that has evaluated the use of Viagra in patients with prostate cancer or urinary tract problems,” Pfizer said.
Pfizer has said it will take Viagra off the market in the US by 2016.
